Super BayThe southern tip of San Francisco Bay is today hosting the Super Bowl, the biggest event in US Sports. Near the tip of the bay, a number of colorful ponds appear – these ponds are used for harvesting salt by evaporating seawater. Microorganisms that are able to live in the increasingly salty waters cause the colors you can see in some ponds. Other ponds are part of efforts to restore some of the wetlands around the bay, many of which were destroyed in the process of developing the area. The bay is also bounded by several major faults; the linear feature in the hills to the west of the bay is home to the San Andreas Fault, while the eastern part of the bay is home to the Hayward fault. Both of these faults take up parts of the motion between the Pacific and North American plates, and the mountains nearby are being pushed up as part of this motion. If you zoom in far enough on the original Landsat image linked below, Levi’s Stadium can be spotted just east of the airport in Santa Clara.-JBBImage credit: USGS/NASA/Landsathttps://flic.kr/p/DJxB3g -- source link
