darthluminescent:LET ME CRY ABOUT THE TRAGEDY OF ANAKIN SKYWALKER AGAIN.I absolutely believe that Anakin desperately wanted a family–that his vision of it was idealized, because he’d been dreaming about it for so long, but that he wanted it so badly–yet look what happens when that impending family is looming ahead of him: His fear for the future and the unknown override that desperate want he has.Anakin is a tragedy because his fear consumes him, because it takes over him, so just about every time the baby is discussed, Anakin never comments on it, he tries to avoid thinking or talking about it, it’s always Padme who says their lives are going to change, it’s Padme who is planning for the future, it’s Padme who wants to leave and raise their child. Every time Anakin changes the subject or skips over that part, it’s because his fear of change is gibbering away at him, overriding everything else AND I CRY A LOT ABOUT THAT.ANAKIN SKYWALKER DID NOT WANT TO THINK ABOUT THAT BABY OR HAVE IT BE REAL, BECAUSE THE TRAGEDY OF HIM IS THAT HIS FEAR ATE EVERYTHING ELSE IN HIM. FEAR OF RESPONSIBILITY, FEAR OF CHANGE, FEAR FOR PADME’S LIFE, FEAR OF EVERYTHING.(Full scene caps linked in bold!)Well, that’s won– That’s wonderful. - Anakin first hears the news and his face goes through the typical contortions of someone who has no idea how to feel about this, who is blindsided by it and feels like he just got hit by a space shuttle in the gut. The worried, fearful look on his face is the reaction of someone who is TERRIFIED by this news and then forces himself (as Anakin so often forces himself to try to be something he’s not, to be stronger than he is for Padme) to say that’s won– that’s wonderful. Even the words are difficult to get out, but, oh, he wants to be happy with her. But he’s terrified.Ani, I want to have our baby back home on Naboo. - Padme is the one planning for the future here, where she wants to have the baby, how she wants to set up the house for the baby. Anakin watches her, his expression is guarded and tight, until she turns to look at him, and he puts a smile on his face. He doesn’t comment about the baby, just that she’s so beautiful. Anakin does not want to think about that baby or the changes that they’ll have to make for it.This baby will change our lives. - Anakin has a dream about Padme dying in childbirth and it obviously terrifies him. Again, Padme is the one who asks about the baby and comments that it’s going to change their lives, but Anakin doesn’t really answer that part, not until Padme suggests they ask Obi-Wan for help. Then Anakin raises his chin and is defiant, that, no, they’re not asking Obi-Wan for help, THEIR BABY IS A BLESSING. This is more about Anakin’s reaction to Obi-Wan than it is about the baby itself, a knee-jerk reaction to what he doesn’t want to do/think about.I came to see if you and the baby were all right. - By this point, Anakin has been dreaming about Padme dying for awhile and it’s the only time he comments on the baby first and, to be honest, it kind of really reads like, “Has the baby killed you yet????” when he checks up on them.Help me raise our child. - On Mustafar, Padme begs Anakin to run away with her, to help her raise their child. But again he skips over that part and doesn’t acknowledge anything about the baby. He’s pretty far gone by this point, but the part about the baby doesn’t even seem to register with him, it’s only about Padme herself and what he’s planning for the galactic future.Where is Padme? - After Padme has died, Vader asks where is she? Is she safe? Sidious answers that she’s dead. Vader howls in agony, but there’s no mention of the baby or whether it survived.During The Clone Wars we see Anakin being like a big brother to Ahsoka and that Artoo is a beloved pet droid to him, Anakin absolutely has so much care to give, but his fear of the unknown, the fear of a baby even before the dreams start, then the fear of Padme dying, the fear of how it would force him to choose between his family and being a Jedi (a choice that Anakin works very hard to avoid having to make) because they can’t hide a baby the way they can hide a marriage, all of it overrides what joy he would have gotten from the news. Anakin loves deeply, but his fear is even deeper in so many ways, and that is the tragedy that makes me cry for him again and again, because what should have been something that elated and thrilled him, instead ate away at him because of his anxieties and fear. The baby they had together was never real to him because he was too busy with all the screaming noise in his head and the utter terror that lived in him and what he didn’t want to change or have to give up.AND I CRY ABOUT THE TRAGEDY OF ANAKIN SKYWALKER A LOT. -- source link
