operafantomet:A shout-out for Marcus Tylor: He was Steve Barton’s dresser in the original West End production, as well as an aspiring (today professional) photographer. He documented amazing moments in the original production, and has gathered his “best of” photos from the first year backstage along with anecdotes and funny inside information, in the book “Phantom of the Opera 1986-87: The First Year Backstage”. The first book was more of a sales catalogue than a book. The paper was cheap, the photo print grainy. Each photo had a code underneath, and the release was meant just as much as a publication where you could order better prints from the photographer. Now, last year a revised version was published. The paper and print was taken up a notch, and the book also contains 232 brand new colour photos. The colour photos includes “costume bible photos”, where each costume in the show was photographed from all angles. A selection of these has been printed in colour in the book (see examples above). I kid you not when I say the book is packed with fantastic, never-before-seen photos. I thought I had seen it all, being a seasoned fan and all. I had definitely not seen it all. The book is rather expensive in the hardcover edition; some $100 plus shipping. I will eventually get it, but as of now I simply can’t afford it: http://www.blurb.com/b/2687352-phantom-of-the-opera-1986-7-private-edition-hardcoThe good news is that it’s also available as an iBook. Yes, it’s locked to the Apple formate and you need an iPad or iPhone. But even technically challenged me managed this. This versions costs some $30: http://store.blurb.com/ebooks/384308-phantom-of-the-opera-1986-7-private-edition-hardcoverI would like to spam Tumblr like crazy with all these fantastic photos. It’s my wet costume dream to see hi res, sharp photos of the original costumes, or Rebecca Caine’s dress rehearsal in the show, or Michael Crawford’s crazy Christmas celebration. OR ROSEMARY ASHE’S NIPPLES, HAHAHA! And it would be fun to share it all with you, to nerd about details, to see the original cast in never-before-seen photos. But you know what? Marcus Tylor did a groundbreaking job documenting the first year of the show, and he did an amazing job making a publication of it. He deserves every penny, and by sharing the photos I would be stealing that from him. Do consider at least the iBook version, if you have compatible tool. I promise you it’ll make you swoon. -- source link
