On the wrong pathWhen the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change makes its reports, they project how carbon contents in the Earth’s atmosphere will change given some assumptions for how society reacts. Those emission levels can then be turned into estimates for how big of a temperature change we will see this century. The colored lines in this plot are those models. For humanity to limit warming to 1-2°C during the 21st century (not exactly a safe level but potentially limiting the scale of the disaster), we need to get down to one of the lower paths. The calculated emission scenarios start in 2005 as the IPCC has put out calculations like this in several reports.Last week we noted that the year 2013 showed the largest carbon increase of any single year in the last 3 decades (http://tinyurl.com/k7e85dn). The point for 2014 marks roughly where we are right now. This does not appear to be a sustainable path.-JBBImage credit and report: Global Carbon Projecthttp://www.globalcarbonproject.org/carbonbudget/ -- source link
