Ashes: A Tale of Two Spheres. Hume Nisbet. London: Authors’ Co-operative Publishing Co., Ltd., 1890. First edition. Nisbet’s protagonist Dirk Davelock, a starving magazine artist, is badly treated by Moloch, the art director of Grabbleson & Co and he and his family are preyed upon by Grabbleson’s agent, the vampiric Mr. Melgarf, “who came into their company grey and bloodless.” Davelock ultimately becomes rich, famous and showered with commissions (resulting perhaps from a deal with the Devil), while Moloch ends up a penniless street artist. -- source link
