Pastel on paper.When a friend took the socially reserved Sloan to a Philadelphia brothel in 1898, he formed an instant attachment to one of the women. By the end of his first meeting with Anna Wall (better known as Dolly), he expressed his serious feelings for her. Despite the concerns of his friends, he began living with Dolly and they married in 1901.
