Hobart Twilight Market, at Twilight.Facebook || Instagram || WebsiteHere’s a shot from the Hobart Twilight Market, taken about a month ago. It was the first time the market took place in this location, and I have a bit of a history with shooting the Twilight Market, so I thought I’d better get down and grab some shots. I wandered around the market for a while, but felt rather uninspired. The light wasn’t particularly good, and it was crowded and awkward to get around. I was also carrying a heap of gear, which made it difficult to move around comfortably. All-in-all, I wasn’t really enjoying the experience of shooting the market from the ground level. Just as I was deciding whether to stay or go, the sun began to set, and I was overcome with a desire to do some landscape photography. The market takes place directly across the road from the University Art School Campus, and I knew that I could get a great angle on the market from the upper levels, so I decided to head over and see what I could get.I experimented with shooting from the top floor, and the middle floor, before deciding I liked the higher angle better. Unfortunately the only angle I liked was from inside someone’s private studio, and the interior of the school was lit, which cast big reflections on the glass I was trying to shoot through.I ended up deciding that as long as I was respectful of the space, and stayed away from the person’s artwork, I was comfortable with shooting from the location. I also discovered that I could hold my jacket over my camera to cut down the reflections, and I got to work shooting bracketed exposures over the course of the sunset/blue hour. I knew the shot I was looking for would be a blended exposure, since the market would look best when the lights were turned on. That wouldn’t happen until the sunset was over, so I kept the same composition for around 45 minutes to ensure I had all the photos I’d need for my blend. Overall I’m pretty happy with the image, which ended up as a blend of 3 images if I remember correctly. One was the sunset, the other the market, and a third was just used to control the star-bursts on the lights, which were a little too intense on the original market image. If I were to do this shot again, I think I’d try a different composition, which included more of the road in the front. I think the addition of some light trails from passing cars might be cool. I also wouldn’t mind repeating the shot several times, to see if I could get a more intense sunset. -- source link
