Summer 2018 - reduce reuse recycleWe try to do what we can to keep things out of the landfill. Also, we are still slowly rebuilding this place, using unconventional methods and materials. Here, I’m cramming styrofoam that was used to ship stuff, into a white woven bag of some sort. The white woven bags were bought in bulk, with the understanding that they were super durable and highly UV resistant, as the website said. They were going to be filled with various materials and used under the house in a particular way… it turns out, they are not, in fact, very durable and also not UV resistant. We use them a few times, mostly by filling with our custom soil mixes that we make for various stuff, and then when they have too many holes or whatnot, they are filled with something like this. Then they go underneath the house, to help fill in areas that are not yet fully finished. They accomplish a couple of things - they are placed on the bare soil under the house, and then one can walk under the house without causing erosion on our steep slope. Water can still flow throw (which is good) and partially blocks air flow (also good). Eventually more air flow will be blocked as more bags are added, which is very good. The underside of the house is a very tricky area to deal with. Anything that comes in contact with the ground has to be able to handle water, yet at the same time, you don’t want it to transmit that water to the rest of the house structure in any way. The steep slope and the seriously wonky original construction are just bonus factors to deal with, as we try to grapple with the best ways to handle the building envelope in this gradual retrofit. We’d rather be gardening, of course. -- source link
