The overlapped rose is intended to represent their inner beauty. The rose then withers away into the darkness, portentously foreshadowing the coming events and the serious nature of the story that’s about to unfold. … It was the length of that enveloping darkness - I mean - in a pitch-black theatre; it makes you feel somewhat uneasy. … So after the period of darkness, we have the opening, where [the audience] is confronted by a sudden burst of vibrant roses, to relieve the dramatic tension.
