Flowing from the natural into the man madeThe lava flows that ran down the flanks of the 1021 metre Serra de Santa Bárbara in the Azores archipelago are made of dark basalt, the volcano being currently inactive (it last erupted in 1761). It is the highest peak on the island of Terceira and sits on the rim of a 1km caldera surrounded by the tendrils of past lava flows. What intrigued me about theimage is the juxtaposition between the lava flows and the field walls, also made of dark basalt and showing the distinctive regularity of human work and a careful and harmonious interaction with the landscape. The natural seems to flow and fade into the artificial in the landscape, including some green fields that are surrounded by flows. It stands as a beautiful example of the meeting of human and physical geography. LozImage credit: Digital Globe -- source link
