adayinthelesbianlife:Leslie Cohen and Beth Suskin (top), models for the women seated in the Gay Liberation Monument (bottom). On Saturday June 26, 2010, during New York City Pride weekend, Cohen and Suskin were being videotaped for the documentary Written in Stonewall, while sitting with the images of themselves in Christopher Park.“We had returned our rental car on Charles St. and were walking back to the apartment where we were staying”, Cohen said. “We went past the park and stopped at the statues. There was a homeless man lying up against the statue of me and when he saw us looking he said, referring to the statue of me: “I talk to this woman all the time. She is my friend.” Then Beth told him we were the models for the statue and at first he didn’t believe us, but when he took a close look at us and then the statues, he went wild, calling all his friends over. It happens every time we’re at the sculpture and anyone finds out we were the models. People get very excited and relate their personal stories and relationships to the sculpture and everyone seems to have one. Needless to say, it is very moving for us and vindicates what I think the artist George Segal hoped to accomplish – a dialogue of love, affection, and understanding between gays and lesbians, the community and visitors from around the world, through art.” -- source link
