My tween read #TheHateYouGive in a week & the book & the movie spurred countless discussions about important topics. So there was no doubt that she was going to be front & center when fabulous young adult novels authir @AngieThomas came to her school for a conversation with another wonderful author of #YA books @NicStone, both of whom were introduced by prolific writer & my daughter’s play aunt @MyBrownBaby. In a standing room only diverse crowd, we heard these authors discuss the challenging isms our children are dealing with from their perspective & how the experiences & stories of #BlackGirls are valuable. We watched young people bravely ask thoughtful questions & the authors patiently give them truthful & insightful answers about everything from their complex relationship with #HipHop to the challenges of being a person of color in the publishing game to their creative processes & winding paths to success that included persevering through difficult setbacks. Check Angie’s appreciation for @Official.LeftEye’s intervention in her life. And the authors presented their answers as their authentic selves. It was empowering & refreshing. Flowing a verse from her new book, #OnTheComeUp, Angie (a.k.a. Young Short A) lived out her one of her dreams on stage rapping as furious as @Twistagmg, whose lyrics she admitted to borrowing as a kid to seem cool. In her intro, my girl @DeneneMillnerBooks spoke movingly about the importance of works that feature characters who resonate with young black readers. We were thrilled to hear that #OnTheComeUp has been optioned for a film (that Angie is producing!!!) & that she is writing a third book set in Garden Heights & a fourth set in her home state of Mississippi.
