Since Fallen is officially (FINALLY) out in the UK (even though only in 2 cinema chains…), it was such a great feeling to be able to see this castle on screen and watch it coming to life. Back in the summer of 2015 my friends and I went interrailing. We were in Budapest, and as we’d been massive fans of the Fallen series for a number of years, and were eagerly awaiting the film, this castle was at the very top of our bucket list for Hungary. We literally almost died. I wish I was exaggerating. We got totally lost in Tura (the village where the castle is), and the train station is little more than a concrete platform in between railway tracks. We could see no ticket machine on which to buy tickets to get back to Budapest. We tried asking for directions, but we only met one person that spoke English well enough to understand both what we were asking and convey directions (we should have had a language guidebook with us; it was our first time being in a place where English wasn’t commonly spoken; learning curve!). The guy at the entrance of the castle looked surprised to see us, and when we got inside there wasn’t a single soul there. Not even staff. We were completely alone, which was awesome (and terrifying). This place is hauntingly beautiful. It’s not what you’d expect for a castle, part of its falling down and it’s surrounded by a wire fence. Inside the paint is chipped and, weirdly, there’s a room just full of pictures of Angelina Jolie. Health and safety would have a field day in this place, but that’s part of its charm!! Sure, it’s terrifying navigating around a tiny village where no one speaks English on your first real trip outside the UK and countries where English is a main language. I’m so glad I finally got to see this place on the big screen!! Tura will always be one my favourite - and scariest - memories of that summer, of five nineteen year olds who had felt brave that particular day. -- source link
