“Self-Portrait with fur-trimmed robe” 1500, Limewood, Albrecht Dürer, Germa
“Self-Portrait with fur-trimmed robe” 1500, Limewood, Albrecht Dürer, Germany, the Alte Pinakothek in Munich In this very special portrait we can take a look at the elegant fashions of the early renaissance: long hair hanging at both sides of the face, carefully groomed moustache and beard and the main garment in this painting, the (surely) long robe not only fur-trimmed but also fur-lined (can you see the fur at the sleeve openings?). This garments were for the cold weathers and are the evolution of the simple robes from the middle ages that were cut in a “T” shape; this one has separated sleeves that were joined to the body with fabric or maybe leather strips that let the underneath shirt, robe or doublet be seen. This was a very fashionable detail in sleeves and breeches legs in the middle ages and renaissance. -- source link
