January 2017 - Transferring LadybugsLadybugs are superb for pest control, especially for controlling aphids. They come into the house every winter. V knows how … I don’t really want to know at this point. Anyway, they’re great indoors since we have lots of plants in the Great Room and the Solarium. They’re very useful in Dome 2 though, so how to get them there? After some trial and error, V takes the shop vac (part of it seen in the background), and instead of having any sort of a big bag in there, he just uses this old pillowcase and puts it in the bottom of the vacuum. Then, he plugs the vacuum into a lamp dimmer, to decrease the suction on the vacuum, so it’s gentler on the ladybugs. On warm winter days, or days where we have full sun so the house is warm, they ladybugs go berserk, so those are the days he’ll vacuum some up to transfer them to other protected plant spaces.I have heard of some people using Dust Busters in the same way.Is there a downside to having lots of ladybugs in your house? Well, eventually they do die. They are easily swept up along with all the dirt that we constantly manage to track into the house. I’d have to sweep all the time anyway, so it’s no additional burden for me. When we move all these indoor plants back outside, we do a big thorough clean up of the area as well. -- source link
