We now have lambs in the fields right up by the house. In addition, our favorite sheep from last year is back. That’s her in the second and third pictures. We call her Princess, which she seems to like. She’s blind in her left eye and her teeth show a bit in the front (not typical), which makes her easy to recognize. She is also extremely, unusually wooly. Last year she seemed to have evaded the shearing doled out to the ladies who didn’t shed their wool on their own, and it looks like she’s still wearing that coat on top of her new one. I’m sure she was very cozy over the winter. Last summer she showed interest in my grass clippings, which I started pouring over the fence for her. By early autumn she would come running with her lambs when she heard the snik-snik-snik of my push mower. I fed them a lot of grass, and she clearly remembers us and/or the grass clippings because yesterday she marched right up to the fence with the expectant look you see in the last picture. I’m looking forward to her having lambs this year. She’s a very stern mama, maybe because her blind eye makes her more anxious about the lambs. The sheep have a kind of throat-clearing sound they make to call the lambs away from us, and Princess does A LOT of throat clearing. We managed to feed her lambs by hand once last summer, but she was never willing to get that close herself. Maybe the best we can hope for is her letting us feed the lambs without clearing her throat. -- source link
