Astronaut ArtEach time an astronaut flies to the International Space Station, they get the opportunity to express themselves through the photos they take of the remarkable blue sphere passing below them. It really is fascinating to observe their different styles – some seem partial to urban scenes, some wilderness. Some focus on weather, some aim their lenses at the oceans. Some aim for videos, some aim for vines, some aim for still frames. In a couple hours after this post appears, Commander Scott Kelly and his Russian counterpart Mikhail Kornienko, who have spent over 11 consecutive months on the International Space Station, along with additional Russian Cosmonaut Sergey Volkov, will return to Earth in a Russian-made Soyuz capsule.Commander Kelly’s official mission was to study the effects of long-term space travel on the human body. The typical trip to the ISS lasts only 6 months, but understanding the effects of even longer space voyages is going to be necessary should humans ever attempt the nearly yearlong voyage to Mars. However, before he departed, the US President personally challenged Commander Kelly to “Instagram” his voyage.I’ve found Commander Kelly’s style of photography to be uniquely artistic. He has shared a wide variety of colorful sunbursts from the sunrises and sunsets he’s viewed, and he has explored the surface of the Earth with the eye of an abstract artist. His photos capture patterns, shapes, and the intermingling of color in a way that brings my mind modern/abstract art. Here are just a handful of his recent photos. It’s kind of a shame that NASA doesn’t have an official archive set up where each astronaut’s photos are compiled so that you can enjoy each one’s style.-JBBImage credits: Station Commander Kelly (NASA/Public Domain)https://www.instagram.com/stationcdrkelly/ -- source link
