Paxistima myrsinites is in the family Celastraceae. Commonly known as Oregon boxleaf, or mountain lover, it is native to western North America along the Rocky Mountains from British Columbia to Mexico. Oregon boxleaf is one of the few species of Celastraceae native to North America; the family is more widely distributed in the tropics of the world. This is also the only species of Celastraceae native to Colorado, where these photos were taken. Oregon boxleaf grows along rocky hillsides and slopes reaching up to 2 feet tall and producing axillary clusters of maroon to magenta flowers. While human uses of this plant are limited, it is frequently grazed on by native wildlife such as deer. -- source link
