bellesdomain:Mistoffelees- Cats the MusicalOriginal design, John Napier 1981“Basic” design is his ensemble costume, before he changes for his solo into “The Magical Mr. Mistoffelees”.Over the years, the fandom has established the nickname of “Quaxo” for his ensemble role, as a kind of secret identity. In fact, “Quaxo” was the tap-dancing soloist in the Gumbie Cat routine - it just so happened that this was performed by Wayne Sleep, the original Mistoffelees. But there was no hard and fast rule that Quaxo was Mistoffelees in the early productions - whoever did that tap solo was Quaxo. Hence one of the Alonzo designs being labelled “Quaxo”. Later the tap routine was shortened and the solo cut, but the London production held on to the tradition of him being “Quaxo, otherwise known as Mr Mistoffelees”.The two near-identical versions of Misto’s song costume are pre-London and pre-Broadway. Quite why it was deemed necessary to re-draw many of the designs in identical poses is not clear - to all intents and purposes the designs are the same, but the art style is much smoother. The left, the earlier, is published in the London edition of “Cats: The Book of the Musical”, the right, published in the Broadway edition of the same book. Finally, Prototype Misto as a ribbon dancer. Such a beautiful idea, and so very feline! -- source link
