sinethetamagazine:The Flight into Egypt (逃往埃及). Ren Yifang (任懿芳). Ink and color on silk. Early 20th century.On display as part of the Palace Museum’s recent collaborative exhibition with the Vatican, Beauty Unites Us, The Flight into Egypt depicts the Biblical narrative recounted in the Gospel of Matthew, in which Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus flee from Jerusalem into Egypt, escaping Herod the Great’s massacre. The painting depicts a mix of Eastern and Western styles in both its rendering and its subject matter, emblematic of much of the Catholic art that flourished during the Qing Dynasty.The writing on the bottom right of the painting reads: “任懿芳 恭绘,” or “Respectfully made by Ren Yifang.” In the upper left corner, the red seal reads: “天主圣母，为我等祈,” or “Holy Mother, pray for me.” Follow sinθ magazine for more daily posts about Sino arts and culture. -- source link
