dominusvenustas:Simone Martini, The Annunciation, c.1333Simone Martini was a very particular artist. He painted for the Popes at Avignon when the papacy was based there during the schism. His style is therfore very much influenced by the courtly style with flowing drapery and elegant figures. As I strolled through the Uffizi today I couldn’t help but be drawn toward this marvellous altarpiece. It has something I have never seen before. The words spoken between the Virgin Mary and Archangel Gabriel are actually written on the panel. You can just make it out on the image above. It is extraordinary and extraordinarily beautiful. A masterpiece by an individual artist who was much in demand and rightly so!One can imagine how it glittered in the candlelight on the altar in the church. It must have been magical. And very powerful as an artwork of devotion evoking the spirit of the time. -- source link
