uncharacteristicallyalertkoala:melanoradrood:I said I should TED talk this, and to be honest some day I will get myself together and proper ted talk this whole series, but this, this right here? This was what made me able to get over and get past the end of 1x06. This right here was where I knew things would be okay. This right here is when it became obvious that Simon knew he could no longer be alone, that he loved Daphne, and that he wanted whatever could have been growing in her.Now first things first, we do not know if this is meant to be a miscarriage or a late period or just her normal cycle. From the books, we know that she missed a cycle and thought she was pregnant, then lost it. Now, given what we know of the general timeline, how long they were at Clyvedone, how much time had passed after that night, the traveling, etc, and the near sex on the steps scene, my thoughts is -She was late. Her period was late. And he knew it. He wouldn’t let her out of his sight so that he could know immediately. If she had not had her cycle since they were married, or if she had, either way, he would have known when to expect her cycle, because they’re going at it hard every night. And then we have the crying. The crying, and Mrs Bridgerton going to her as well. Obviously, her mom realizes that she probably thought she was pregnant. So let’s set the scene her. Simon has told her that if she is pregnant, that he will stand by her, and they will be together. If she is not pregnant, they shall live separate lives.SHE LOVES HIM. She doesn’t understand him, she doesn’t know what he has suffered, she doesn’t really understand the wrong she has done to him, but SHE LOVES HIM. She could have been a Princess! But she burned for HIM. She married HIM. She wants to be with HIM.And he wants to live separate lives if she’s not pregnant. On the one hand, it sort of matters if she was late or not etc etc, but really, it also doesn’t, because the fact that she is bleeding, that means it is the end of their marriage, their relationship, their happiness. And she’s crushed. She’s hysterically sobbing in her mother’s arms. She’s devastated. Whether it’s because she thought she was pregnant or she realizes she is losing Simon, it doesn’t really matter - her heart is breaking. And then, there’s Simon. We have heard this music being played throughout as they watch the performance, and then, it’s dead silent. The orchestra is still playing, but all Simon can hear is Daphne’s sobs. He’s not an idiot. They were holding hands, she jumped a little, looked down at her stomach, left the room, and then started crying. He knows what just happened. She just realized she isn’t pregnant. She just realized their marriage is over. She just had her heart broken.NOW LOOK AT HIS FACE.He is in a room filled with people, all glancing to the Duke and Duchess of Hastings, who are the center of so much scandal. The Duchess leaves their balcony, and then her mother leaves her own balcony. The Duke is left sitting there, stone faced.LOOK AT HIS EYES.This is the boy that could not speak to get out his thoughts. This is the boy that has suffered for so long. He vowed to spend his life alone. And now, look at him. He just realized that he’s about to spend his life alone. No child. No wife. No love.He has to swallow it down, because it looks like he wants to scream. He wants to scream in anger, in rage, in heartbreak. He’s fucking devastated, listening to his wife cry her heart out. He loves her, but he feels tied to this vow to his father, and he swore to her that they would separate, and he feels like he must keep these vows.He has to leave Daphne, or who’s to say he won’t give in again, and fuck her, and get her pregnant? He’s sitting there and all he can hear are her tears and he wants to cry with her. He’s breaking apart sitting right there. And there’s nothing he can do, in that moment. His pride is eating at him, his anger for his father, his loneliness. Simon’s heart is breaking in this scene, and he is so utterly lost.So wonderfully analyzed @melanoradrood ! I agree with everything you said.I rewatched episode 7 within the past couple days to make some gifs, and I was thinking a lot about his path in this episode. We see seeds earlier in the episode for what he’s feeling at the symphony in that final scene: In their dinner fight, he says “because you are my wife” and I’ve seen posters refer to him as being possessive, but I think it’s really him saying, “you are my wife. I want you with me, in our bedroom, in my life.” - not because he thinks he owns her, but because he’s so desperate not to lose what he only gained a couple weeks ago - his family, her.In the stairs scene, he’s wounded when she questions his faithfulness and whether there’s anything left in their marriage, and he’s with her emotionally until she suggests heading to the bedroom. Her saying that flips him from leading with his heart to leading with his head – thoughts of the vow to his father and not wanting to break it. So he can’t have sex with her again. Therefore, they must live separate lives if she’s not pregnant. Then later in his argument with Anthony, he first talks about trying to be a man of his word (head, logic, procedures) but then replies to Anthony, “But Daphne is my family now, and there’s no changing that.” His heart is in charge again, which back at home leads to that beautiful kiss after Daphne tends to his wounds, but then Daphne asks about a child and his reasons, and he’s back to his head being in charge again. (”It cannot be undone.” - sounding very procedural). Then at the symphony, he hears her sobs, and it is his heart breaking, knowing that he is losing his family, and next we see them with Henry Granville, Simon just wants to run away because that’s the only way he thinks he can uphold the rule/vow he made. His emotional journey should have been more developed, but the emotional brushstrokes are there, and for him to say “I do not want to be alone.” It’s him making a decisive head vs. heart choice that he’s been struggling with, that same choice Daphne puts into words in the rain scene. <3 This is heartbreaking to watch. Simon swallows down all his emotions in order to mask whatever he’s feeling as he hears Dapne’s woeful cries, his eyes reflect all the emotions he can’t verbally express, you can see pain, loneliness and hopelessness. Regé absolutely nailed this one. Phoebe did amazing as well. ❤️ -- source link
