Audition, a Japanese film directed by Takashi Miike, Is about a widow who is urged by his son to find a new wife. He is helped by a friend of his, a film producer, who creates a mock audition for a film, to try to find the perfect woman for him. A young and timid girl catches his eye, and he is infatuated by her dedication to ballet and her “serious take on life.” However, he begins to realize the odd inconsistencies in her résume, and slowly comes to a conclusion that *SPOILER ALERT* she was the main cause. The first 40 minutes of the film plays out like a romantic comedy/soap opera. The average viewer would not suspect a thing, until things start to get unsettling. Everything begins to unravel about the mysterious girl and it prepares us for the punch in the gut towards the end of the film. This film is a psychological horror, so it plays on the girl’s history of child abuse, trauma, and current psychological disorder that forms her psychopathic qualities. She wants someone to literally dedicate their entire lives to her. And when hey don’t, they suffer the punishment worse than death. Just imagine being the poor fellow in the bag. There have been claims (or even pure fact) that Rob Zombie was so disgusted by this film, that he stormed out of the premiere. The only thing I would say to that is, what a wuss. Even a 15 year old (I watched it a while ago) can take this film. This film isn’t just about gore, and viewers should watch the film with a different perspective. There is a reason why this film is a cult classic. This movie is without a doubt one of Miike’s masterpieces of horrific proportions and sets the precedent for what superb Asian horror should be. ~S.L. www.evisceratedbyasianhorror.tumblr.com -- source link
