Woke up to find Rosalind Franklin is today’s Google Doodle! So wonderfully deserved! For the unacquainted, Franklin’s work on X-ray diffraction images of DNA led to the discovery of DNA’s double helix structure. There’d be no Watson and Crick if Franklin hadn’t come first. And really, she did find it first. It was her data used in their research, and the article she wrote - first - was published after Watson and Crick’s because they wanted the credit themselves (because heaven forbid a woman beat you to a major scientific breakthrough in the 1950s, oh noes). Today, she gets her due, but she died of ovarian cancer very young and unfortunately never lived to see herself get the credit she deserved during her short lifetime. -- source link
