amindamazed:gabbysilang:i want theories about why sherlock is trying to look more conventionally presentable this season. his trousers aren’t wrinkled, he’s not layering randoms over his shirts, he’s consistently wearing button-up shirts rather than thrift store tshirts, he’s in suit jackets. i say “trying” because he still buttons his shirts to the collar and his suit jackets are a bit too wide in the shoulder, his grooming neat to the point of severity.my entire theory is “a thing happened in london”, which i realize is the same as saying “time passed in the place where he was”. my other theory is just me looking like :< at the screen, yelling DID U KILL SOMEBODY, SHERLOCK??? and no, he probably did not. my third theory is that the costuming and makeup depts were like “idk the hat thing isn’t working, let’s try these other outfits and shave most of jonny’s head hair off” and that i just spend way too much time thinking about this stuff. that last one is the most solid theory so far.but also possible: he is just trying to look like a grown-up to show joan that he’s doing okay look joan look i’m wearing big kid clothes and shirts without words on them joan i purchased an electric razor joan joan jOAN I KNOW HOW IRONS WORK NOW and i can’t i can’t i can’t think about that too long without breaking down into moans and rocking around on the floor like an upside-town tortoise. I don’t argue that his appearance is a bit more tailored so far in s3, particularly with the absence of stubble, but the transformation from t-shirts and rumple to buttoned collars and suit jackets started much earlier. He dressed like this for most of s2 and started to more often than not in the second half of s1. (and elementaryfan13 pointed out he also dressed like this with Irene in the s1 finale flashbacks.)The very first instance of a fully buttoned shirt was actually the end of 1x01. And I’d argue the first time he dressed to indicate professional respect for another (post-Hemdale, that is) was later in the episode shown in your first pic above, 1x07, when he confronts Gregson about the planted evidence. I suspect the just barely too big sizing of the jackets is intentional, to make him look thinner. That might also be a reason behind the severity of the haircut, which appeared in s2 also. Part of that might be simply to conform more closely to ACDcanon descriptions of the character, but might also indicate he lied about not relapsing… or was just miserable to the point of not eating [without Watson]. -- source link
