vinegardoppio:CAN I JUST TALK ABOUT THIS FRAME FOR A MINUTEThis is while Speedwagon is dressing him the fuck down. Dio is trembling in the clip before this. He’s trying to keep his composure but he’s shaking. His plans are all falling apart in front of him, and there’s nothing that he can do about it, that’s one thing–he could have tricked Jonathan, he could have weaseled his way out of it if it wasn’t for Speedwagon. Speedwagon, who comes in and tells him to his face that all the shit he went through in his childhood meant nothing, that he still had the choice to have some shred of decency–something only Speedwagon can say, because he had the same childhood and he could’ve turned out just like Dio. When the candelabra gets thrown at Dio, it’s just one more thing thrown at him in his life that he’s had to dodge. But being put down so viciously and actually having it stick is something Dio’s never experienced before this. He’s always had the upper hand, and any momentary defeat is easily avenged later (i.e. Danny) or ultimately adverted or justified in a way that usually only makes sense to Dio. He is so dead set on never being defeated, and he hasn’t–he might have lost a battle or two, but never lost the war, until this moment. As much a trademark as his muda’s or his wryyyy’s, Dio’s evil eyes are one of his worst weapons. Throughout part 1, Dio always uses this intense stare whenever he wants to get his way–it’s completely unsettling, but not only that, he uses it effectively. Dio looks you in the eye when he lies. The anime makes a point of highlighting his eyes every moment he’s trying to get his way, and the effect is obvious–Jonathan will look away, unnerved, and usually just that look is enough to shake someone’s will. He knows how to use it. But this? This is 100% sincere. This is Dio at his lowest. Nearly every frame during this scene shows him losing it–he’s finished. He knows it. It’s not just that his plan was found out, it’s that every attempt to weasel out of it gets subverted in rapid succession. It’s humiliation. And while ultimately he does recover and achieve his ultimate desire–no longer having to fear death–in this moment, in this frame, he’s checked out. He’s so fucking far gone. He isn’t even gritting his teeth or showing any emotion at all except that glare. It’s so fucking raw. -- source link
