coisasdetere:Cille Choiril. An ancient church and graveyard in the Scottish Highlands.Such a beautiful graveyard got me all excited. This is the history I’ve discovered thus far:The church was originally built in the 1400s, and is dedicated to Saint Cairell / Chairill (who was an Irish missionary who came over in the 500s - the name itself means something like Cairell’s Church) . It was rebuilt in the 1930s. Some of the tombstones are no longer in existence, although the inscriptions for some of them are written in some obscure book. There is no active parish here yet some of the stones in the graveyard are very recent (~2000s). If you are descended from someone in this area, good luck, as there isn’t a parish register here. An one point some records were destroyed and/or being Catholic was forbidden so yeah if you’re into genealogy you might have to go for the DNA analysis.It’s absolutely beautiful though, here’s more photos - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UH5khm8A96w -- source link
