13I’ve had the first series of Downton Abbey for months, and yet I never got around to watching it… until now.Oh wait, I actually watched the Pilot several months ago. Lol. (See why I stopped below: by Anna & Bates)I’ve watched just 5 episodes so far! This just reinforces the fact that I’m a sucker for period dramas/films. (Case in point: p&p)Mary’s the loveliest (Michelle Dockery is gorgeous!), but Sybil is the one who shines - even from the sidelines. She’s the most open-minded, the bravest and most forward-thinking of the three, maybe even of the whole family. Her helping Gwen to get a move on her own life was really nice of her (spoiled myself again: I’ll be sorry to see her go).I know that Matthew ends up with Mary (I spoiled myself. Haha), but it was lovely to see the slow burn between them, and how they were subtly, yet not-so-subtly already being written as end game. [I DEFFF SHIP IT, and I’m so NOT looking forward to seeing when Matthew dies. Cries.] [tbh I’ve also already watched that part where he dies. (I know, such a spoilsport for myself – only in special cases.) So… I’m excited for when they actually get together, get married, have a baby; but I’m not excited for feeling that build-up, only for it to be suddenly deflated.]Anna & Bates: I ship it. Also a slow burn like M&M, but it was also kind of written at the onset – Anna was the only one who showed kindness to Bates when he arrived. On that note: When Bates was being bullied in episode 1, and when Lord Grantham sent him away (even when he pleaded - almost begged!!), my heart broke. This was, now that I think of it, the reason why I didn’t continue watching back then.Lord Grantham is so cute like a teddy bear, and like can I please have him as my grandpa? When he spent time with Matthew was so adorable, I was really really shipping Matt to end up with Mary so that it would be even better!MAGGIE SMITH IS THE BEST. Still packs a punch like McGonagall! Her relationship with Isobel is amusing, but it’s one of those things that you never knew you wanted to see until you have it.Is it weird that Elizabeth McGovern & Michelle Dockery look SO ALIKE IT’S INSANE? (It kind of reminds me of OUAT where casting is ON POINT. See)If there’s one character that really rubs me off the wrong way, it’s Lady Edith. I’ve been thinking of why I don’t like her.. I see her as going out of her way just to unnecessarily go up against Mary (the last I saw was of her writing to the Turkish Embassy). It can also be -maybe- because I have a loving (in spite of occasional annoyances) relationship with my younger sister & brother, so it’s weird seeings siblings -sisters- as cunning and uncivil towards each other. I also think that she’s in great want of attention - hence her actions. Still, I think she didn’t need to exact revenge on her sister. While Edith rubs me off the wrong way, I simply do not like O’Brien. (No words needed there.)Thomas’ good looks are such a waste with that snarky attitude and being in cahoots with person from previous line. (Hated him most when he was unreasonably mean to bby William and asked Daisy out – it was clear as day that W liked her)Mrs Patmore is adorable! Saw her as Snow White’s nanny Johanna on OUAT. What a joy to see her on my screen again. I understand her perfectionism, being responsible for everyone’s health anyway. But I find it quite unfair to take it out on the others (particularly Daisy) (especially in 105: she blamed Daisy for putting salt, when it was clearly her who did it.)Speaking of Daisy, she’s so cute, but WHY IS SHE SO BLIND. Blind to Thomas’ machinations (not to mention him being not a ladies’ man), to trust Edith (like really? EDITH? Why not Lady Grantham? Or even Anna?), and especially to bby William.105: Senior Mr Molesley’s look of joy when Violet announced him the winner. That’s all for now. Hopefully I’ll get to finish series one within the week, and even get a few series two episodes in. #Such a sucker for period dramas -- source link
