archaicwonder:Greek Electrum Griffin Protome Brooch, c. 625-600 BCFrom the necropolis of Kameiros, Rhodes, Greece. The ancient site of Kameiros contains the ruins of the Hellenistic and Roman cities, along with a necropolis. Of the classical city, only the facade of the late classical fountain and some agora walls still remain. The hill settlement was constructed on three separate levels: on the bottom terrace were the public buildings, market and temples; the second terrace contained the main settlement and above that, in a dominant position at the top of the hill, was the acropolis, the stoa and the Temple of Athena Kameirados (6th century BC). The top terrace really reflects the former wealth and significance of this ancient city. Homer wrote that Kameiros was one of three city-states founded by Dorians, the other two being Ialyssos and Lindos. The city was later inhabited by Achaeans. In prehistoric times the area was inhabited by Mycenaean Greeks and the earliest archaeological evidence for the city’s foundations date to the 8th century BC. The earthquake of 226 BC destroyed the city and another earthquake in 142 BC destroyed it a second time. -- source link
