So I tried the Dalish Hearthcakes recipe in World of Thedas Vol. 2 and have come to the conclusion that the writers can’t bake. Or at least didn’t test this recipe in office.1. Up it to 2 1/3 cups flour and 1 ½ tsp of each seasoning. Otherwise you have a sticky, unworkable mess somewhere between cake batter, velcro and baby shit. Also, it’s roughly ¼ cup milk.2. Butter the grittle/skillet/heartstone for fucks sake it makes a difference.I wanted to test a little experiment because it didn’t make sense that the dalish would raid villages for sugar because that’s a good way to piss people off and burn a campsite just for sugar. I feel like it’d be more feasible that they’d try to either trade, or substitute for something else. And there’s a lot of options for sugar substitution, which I tested here.On the left is the sugar variant, cooked in a skillet. On the right is the honey variant, baked in an oven at 350F. Sugar tastes more like modern griddle cakes, honey tastes more like historic recipes in that the flavor is more subtle. For the honey variant, replace the ½ cup sugar with 5 tbsp honey, add a pinch more baking soda, use a little less milk, and lower the baking temp to 325F if you bake it.I’ll test the recipe again later to confirm everything, maybe test it out with the other substitution I was curious about, maple syrup. -- source link
