Today’s Astronomy Picture of the Day captured a Perseid Meteor as it exploded in the sky due to building friction with the atmosphere. Meteors like this are small balls of dust; as they move through the atmosphere they heat up and slow down from friction; that heat can cause pressures to build that eventually destroy the object.
