Harwood HoleHarwood Hole is the deepest vertical shaft in New Zealand. It lies in the country’s caving Mecca in north-west Nelson on the South Island. The marble in this region is riddled with subterranean passages, caves and sinkholes. All but one of New Zealand’s 30 deepest caves can be found in this area. The cave was named after Henry Harwood, the original landowner and was first entered in 1958. At the time it was the country’s deepest known cave.Harwood Hole starts at the surface as a 50-metre round entrance and descends 183 meters. Further in it connects with the so called Starlight Cave. The cave has an overall depth of 357 meters. The long rope descend is considered the most spectacular part of the caving experience at Harwoods but should only be attempted by experienced cavers.XandiImage Credits:http://bit.ly/2eVXWVa http://bit.ly/2f0m6kF Sources:http://bit.ly/2fSe7ng http://bit.ly/2fBHISI -- source link
