silentambassadors:T. E. Lawrence entered Damascus on this date in 1918 (shortly after the 10th Australian Light Horse Brigade, who formally accepted the surrender of the city from the Ottomans), spelling the end of Ottoman rule in Syria, and was later instrumental in helping to establish the short-lived reign of King Faisal of Greater Syria. Philatelically speaking, it is said that Lawrence was at least partially responsible for designing the first stamps from the Kingdom of Hejaz (pictured above), one of the early states eventually united with the Sultanate of Nejd to form the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Not to ruin the movie for anyone or anything, but the doctor who treated Lawrence after his motorcycle accident (which *SPOILER* led to his death six days later in 1935 at the age of 46), later helped develop crash helmets after devoting much of his professional life studying and researching head injuries in dispatch motorcyclists.Stamp details:Stamp on top:Issued on: May 13, 2014From: London, EnglandWNS #050.14Stamps on bottom:Issued on: December 23, 1916From: Mecca, Kingdom of HejazSW #4-6 -- source link
