Singer, actor and activist Harry Belafonte turns 85 today. During the Civil Rights Movement, he was one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s confidants. During the 1960s, President John F. Kennedy named Belafonte cultural adviser to the Peace Corps. Belafonte is probably best known for singing, “The Banana Boat Song” with its signature lyric “Day-O.” Below are a few of our favorite Belafonte quotes. When I was born, I was colored.
