madeleine92posts:The Monarchs were waiting for the princes’ arrival with anxiety. Isabella’s desire to embrace her daughter after so many years of living separately was meshed up with her fears in regards to the Archduke’s behavior. He (Philip) fell ill in Olías on their way to Toledo which had been appointed the place of the meeting and where the Castilian Courts were to gather in order to proclaim Juana and Philip heirs to the Castilian throne. Facing such an awkward situation, Ferdinand decided to put the protocol away and went to pay Philip a visit. It was also an opportunity to hug his daughter. The Princess came out to greet the King, embraced and kissed him and then taking him by his hand, she lead him to chambers of the Archduke. It was Ferdinand and his son’s-in-law first meeting. There were many differences between the two, including the King’s view at Philip’s treatment of his daughter. However being aware of the fact he had to come to agreement with the man who was his successor, the king decided to meet him in his quarters. He wanted that meeting to take place in private atmosphere without nosey people around whose stories in regards to their conversation might have been later dangerous. But Philip could barely speak Spanish and Ferdinand didn’t speak French at all so the infanta Juana who had already mastered the language of the burgundian court was their translator. Which was confirmed by the chronicler:And they had a long discussion (Ferdinand and Philip) and the princess was playing the role of a translator between them.Source: “Isabel La Católica” by Manuel Fernández ÁlvarezAN: Bold text: chronicler’s words, normal text: Manuel Fernández Álvarez’s words.
