youknowyourebritishwhen:socketz:youknowyourebritishwhen:cities-to-dust:Someone went wrong somewhere. #Chesterfield #Architecture #DamnthiscountryisbeautifulWhat went wrong incase you were interested is the wood they used hadn’t properly dried out and hardened so was too soft to maintain its proper shape. Most of the skilled workers around Derbyshire died out during the plague and so when this was constructed the workers didn’t have the proper knowledge to do a professional job.It continues to twist about ¼ of an inch every year and as the spire is not attached to the actual church it will eventually fall off unless someone properly secures it.I’ve seen it posted as a folk legend ages ago on wikipedia or something daft that the reason the Crooked Spire is crooked is because it was so surprised to see a virgin getting married in the church that it bent down for a closer look. It will only unbend when the same thing happens again. I’m not sure if that’s an actual folk legend, but it made me laugh. It genuinely is.There’s another legend that says a blacksmith in Bolsover was tricked into hammering a horse shoe onto the devils hoof. When the devil screamed out in pain he flew west towards Chesterfield and on the way he reached out and grabbed a hold of the spire which is why it’s twisted. Apparently this can only be fixed if a virgin gets married in the church.I think these both make a point of saying ‘virgin weddings are incredibly rare in Chesterfield’ -- source link
