If anybody ever tries to tell you the First Doctor was a mean, cold, grumpy old man, ignore them!The First Doctor was a little prickly on the outside at first, but watch more than a few episodes, and you’ll clearly see the heart underneath shining through. This was a Doctor who loved deeply, and wasn’t afraid to express his affection for his friends and family, nor to change his ways when he’d been proved wrong. It’s a testament both to the quality writing, and especially to William Hartnell as an actor, that we go from distrusting and disliking the Doctor in his first appearance, to loving him completely before the first season is through, because we see his emotions as he learns to embrace the universe and find compassion for all the different people in it. No matter what anyone says, caring and love were always part of who the Doctor is, and what the show is about. :) -- source link
