leonawriter: Haha… this. I watch the anime endings and the thing that’s stuck with me about them is how they tend to focus on how Dazai is showing the affection and positive reinforcement to Atsushi that he’s actively denying to Akutagawa. And here… in the second ED, we have Dazai finally reach out and make that reassuring gesture to Akutagawa. And tellingly, Akutagawa is… he doesn’t seem sure on how to take this. Is it real? Is Dazai going to take it away again? Say that it didn’t happen, or that it wasn’t what he thought it was? And on Dazai’s side… I’ve seen people say that the series doesn’t show him developing as a character, but the thing there is that so much of his development is shown through subtleties, and through the ways that other people are affected by his actions and choices. Here, we have symbolism that Dazai is accepting and admitting that he was wrong in the past, and wishes to change, and make amends. Perhaps it won’t come across in ways that most people would recognise, so it’s hard for them to see; but Dazai is someone to whom expressing emotions normally is awkward, and uncomfortable. You have to accommodate for that. Adjust how you look for those proofs of change. -- source link
