Heart shaped weatheringGranite is made of coarse-grained minerals that are resistant to chemical weathering, including potassium feldspars and quartz. They will weather when exposed to water, but they do so very slowly. Furthermore, the crystals in a granite are coarse, leaving very little space for water to get into the rock. The only way water can get into many granites is along fractures. Most rocks break apart as they approach the surface as the pressure above is removed, forming crisscrossing planes called joints. In granites, water gets in to these joints and opens them up, eroding the rocks into boulders. This process is called spheroidal weathering. This spheroidal story brought to you as the Joshua Tree National Park version of a Valentine.-JBBImage credit:Michael Dorausch https://flic.kr/p/8KWtjqReference:http://alliance.la.asu.edu/slides/stop03/3b/3b.html -- source link
