Smiley agateI can’t get enough of these stones, whose slices sometimes emulate anthropomised silly faces. Note that this is not a natural colour, the agate has been boiled in cobalt dye in order to produce the deep blue hue. The areas it has infiltrated are more porous, or at cracks and contacts between different layers of quartz. I don’t normally have much time for treated stones, but in this case the treatment has definitely enhanced (as they euphemise gem treatment in the trade) that appearance of the piece.
