Melilotus officinalis is in the pea family Fabaceae. Commonly known as yellow sweet clover it is widespread around the world as an introduced species. Yellow sweet clover is found in prairies and disturbed areas such as roadsides, ditches, and trailheads. Yellow sweet clover, and other members of the legume family fix atmospheric nitrogen through a mutualistic relationship with bacteria that inhabit the roots. Because of relationship, and the rapid growth of yellow sweet clover, it was used as a cover crop to add nitrogen into the soil for future plantings. Yellow sweet clover is also used as forage for livestock and as a nectar source for honeybees. -- source link
