mmedemaintenon: The marriage of Louis XIV to Françoise d'Aubigné, Marquise de Mainteno
mmedemaintenon:The marriage of Louis XIV to Françoise d'Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon is believed bymost historians today to have occurred on the night of the 9thOctober 1683*. A morganatic union, the marriage was never publicly acknowledgedalthough most people at the time suspected. This was due to the dropped hints such as Françoise’s new apartments (which subsequently became where Louis spent most oftime and, therefore, where courtiers often were), that were closely situated to the King’s, that she rode in the King’s carriage and could remain seated in an armchair in the presence ofroyalty. Françoise’s feelings on her second marriage are harder to infer completely, although, despite the strain of it over the years, there was genuine affection. His feelings for her are clearer, to the point that even those who were enemies of Françoise, had to admit the great depth of his attachment to her. With Françoise, he got the domestic ideal hewanted and for all their 32 years or so of monogamous marriage, his love and reverence for her remained. *sometimes early January 1684 is also dated for their marriage -- source link
