churchcrawler:St Peter & St Paul, Lavenham, Suffolk by Delboy1940Essex (1.5 M views) Thank You.Via Flickr:Suffolk has few more spectacular sights than St Peter and St Paul, as it stands as a sentinel on the hill, over looking the Medieval Suffolk wool town.Although a church has stood on this site since Saxon times, the present chuch is largely 15th Century, with some traces of the church that was here before - the chancel dates from 1340.The Battle of Bosworth was the final battle in the Wars of the Roses between the Houses of Lancaster and York. It was then that John DeVere, the Thirteenth Earl of Oxford and the Lord of the Manor of Lavenham led Henry VII’s army to victory, and as a token of thanksgiving for his safe return from battle he commissioned the building of this church. It was financed by the wealthy cloth merchants of Lavenham, such as Thomas Spring who gave 300 marks towards the building of the church tower, which stands 141 feet high (43 metres)., with the Spring coat of arms round the top 32 times and the Star of the de Veres set in the flint work half way down. -- source link
