Super Mario Odyssey: A Splendid review Oh my God! This game is so good! I grew up with the Mario series, and I can’t say I dislike any of them really. But when Mario 64 came out, it was like seriously the best thing ever. I had never played anything like it, and it was my first 3D game. I have so many memories playing it, and I can still clearly taste the euphoria it gave me back then. Fast forward several console Mario games later (which were all fantastic in their own right), and we have Odyssey. The biggest and most dense sandbox Mario game around. It’s like if you gave Mario 10 times more acid than he’s already on, mixed with a little bit of meth, this is the byproduct. It’s huge, the levels are all packed with Power Moons to collect, and the story is cute af. I’m not one of those reviewers who wants to summarize the plot for you, you can go to Ign or something for that. But I will say pretty much everything about this game is top notch. It’s beautiful, it controls VERY well, and is a lot of ways the best Mario title out there, especially from a technical standpoint. One thing I loved was that Instead of getting power ups, Mario uses his demonic ghost hat friend to let him possess monsters, so your enemies are your power ups, which makes for some very interesting situations. I do miss hitting a block and seeing a fire flower pop out, but this idea if possession is unique and gives the game quite a big more depth. Another thing I love is how many power moons there are to collect. These are the equivalent to Power Stars and Shine Sprites in the other 3D Mario game, and he uses them to power up his ship. Some levels have like freakin’ 80 of of these at least. I’ve only collected 500 and something, and I might not ever get them all. Who knows? The longevity of the game is super duper. Sometimes you find these suckers in the most unlikeliest of spots, and it’s both fun and rewarding to hunt them down. ANOTHER thing I loved is how good you can get at this game, and how getting better is rewarding in itself. There is usually always more than one way to traverse a level or to reach a certain platform. You can learn to chain Mario’s moves in ways that provide more advanced gamers with shortcuts, and it feels and looks really awesome to pull off these crazy stunts. But if you suck at games, it’s cool too, because there’s always an easier more basic way to traverse. One of the things I didn’t love quite so much is something that is very subjective. I’m a big fan of the simple, poppy and upbeat music in the past Mario games. Now, don’t get me wrong, this game has some fantastic tracks. But there are some that just didn’t stick with me. Loving the music in a level makes me want to spend way more time there, but there were a few levels in this game in which I didn’t care much for the music. But that’s entirely a personal thing, music is a big deal to me but may not be a big deal to you. That was literally the only complaint I have about the game. Anyway, this game is extremely fantastic. If you have a Switch, you need this immediately. If you’re on the fence about getting a Switch, this is a very good excuse to go ahead. If you don’t want it and don’t like Mario games, I’m not sure if I can trust you. Anyway, it’s a game worth getting! That’s all, folks! -- source link
