Another pond resident – a great diving beetle. I thought it was a frog when I first saw its little black snout above the water, so I got a surprise when I put my hand in & pulled this out. This is a full-grown adult, but their larvae are about twice this size. The adults can fly, which I would never have guessed by looking at this shiny, solid-looking beast. The fine grooves on its wing cases suggest that it’s a lady; male beetles have smooth cases. Apparently it’s one of our pond’s mightier predators, so I’m sure she’s been giving our tadpoles hell. -- source link
