Ah.I have an answer to this, although it is onlymy answer and may not be true for others. The reason I become obsessed with works of fiction is because it is an escape from reality, where everything is happening to you all at once and it’s hard to figure out how to continue without making one move that can end up screwing you over for the rest of your life. Reality is brutal and quite unforgiving and if you can just leave it behind for a few moments then you can at least breathe instead of drowning under everything that is thrown at you.Not only is fiction for escapism but idealism. Using superheroes stories as an example, they can achieve things that we wish that we could, but would never be able to outside of our minds. We can read and see people that can fly, that can read others thoughts, that can be impervious to bullets, but still are portrayed as very human. Life is not black and white. I deeply wish that it was and that there was a clear ‘good ’ and 'bad’ side, just so that we could know what is actually going to be harmful to us and how to push past and triumph against those bad things. Life is a muddy mixture of grey and it’s not even in the same shade. In fiction (especially superhero stories), generally it is as simple as the good guys versus the bad guys, and that is another form of fulfilling a dream of a world that we know will not ever be perfect, but at least we know who we can and cannot trust.Fiction just seems better than reality, even the bad parts seem far more appealing than the daily slog we have to make; the reassuring that one day things will be better than this. And it is tough. It is hard, hard thing just to live with the insecurities and the inconsolable apprehension for the future. The fear that you won’t be remembered when you aren’t around anymore, and that you won’t have contributed something, anything at all to at least someone. In a story everyone has a role to play that impacts on the characters and story developing around them. Even the most insignificant detail can come back to have major effect on the plot. Heck, just existing or being could turn the entire story around and send it sailing around a corner. To me, personally, there has to be a story. I need to have something that I can dwell on, and wish for, no matter how messed up the ending or even the journey is. There needs to be a story, because without one what could I possibly do? I just feel empty without something to dream about and to hope for because in this messed up world there is one place to retreat to, that makes sense. One Day, I won’t need the stories as much as I do now.Because One Day –I sincerely hope– my life will have become the story that I always wanted. -- source link
