cavetocanvas:Maestà (reconstruction of entire altarpiece) - Duccio, c. 1308-11This work by Duccio is one of the largest altarpieces ever created, and one of the most important. Duccio received this commission later in life; by this point in his career, he was a well established artist with a large workshop. Created for the high altar of the Duomo in Siena, the (in)famous art historian Vasari incorrectly identified the artist as Cimabue in his description of the procession to install the work in the Siena Duomo. The altarpiece was taken apart and parts were sawed off in the 18th century, a result of changing tastes; people didn’t want to see the older medieval works during that time.
