Ewian: A Musical Journey By all rights, I should not be writing this. I’m not a music jour
Ewian: A Musical JourneyBy all rights, I should not be writing this. I’m not a music journalist, and although I have some background in music, I am not an expert in the field. Yet, here I am. Why? Because I know what I like, and I liked what I heard. Ewian. Before they followed me on Twitter, I admit I’d never run across them. They have two videos posted on YouTube, but they’d not been shown to me as recommended listening at the end of other videos I’ve watched, and their hit count was not what one would consider high. As a lover of music, however, I encourage you to help that number of hits, increase. And here’s why…Ewian’s experienced musicians know what they’re doing. Part of a former group, the current duo consists of Ewian Christiansen and Benjamin Lechance. Their sound is much more rich than you’d expect from a turned-digital duo. The music has a melancholy flavor, but there is hope within it that would make Coldplay proud, and the piano lends it all a charmed touch. The digitization isn’t a cover-up either, just a means to compensate for lack of skill. No, this is real, if with a whimsical flair. As a fan of Muse, Radiohead, and The Smiths, the sounds I heard were not new to me, but having it overlap in a single project’s music, definitely was. Yes, the reality is all there, with no rough undercurrents to mar the surface. The music from this German combination has a nearly seamless transition from one ‘voice’ to the other, and I wasn’t the only person that noticed it. (Thank you to Katie for confirming what I had suspected, but wasn’t sure I should write here.) If you enjoy any of the groups just mentioned, you need to wander into Ewian territory. The lyrics, they play along well on their own scale. 'Voices in Your Head’ may contain cartoon imagery, but the emotions discussed are quite real, and anyone that has ever struggled with the rise above depression will recognize this. The grayscale doesn’t become mocking, but it does correctly portray that level of feeling-and the quickfire way in which everyday life can drag you under. Even in this, however, there is a fluttering of renewal. See the video, and you’ll understand what I mean. 'We Will Never Grow Old’ is at the opposite end of the spectrum, being am upbeat, colorful jaunt. You can almost imagine scaling mountains, and the video depicts skydivers plunging hundreds of feet, but the light in this piece never goes out.
