The sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron, situated in one of the few wetlands of Attica. Artemis was the goddess of wild nature, but she was also worshiped as a kourotrophos (“child nurturer”, a name given to gods and goddesses who were believed to protect young people). A maturation ritual for young girls, the Arkteia, was said to take place at Brauron. Before puberty, Athenian girls would stay in the sanctuary for a time and serve Artemis as arktoi (“bears”) in order to be prepared for marriage and motherhood. The archaeological site and museum at Brauron didn’t seem to be much frequented, which was a shame since it was a really nice place (it was a little bit difficult to find the way to it, though). -- source link
