A student of the philosopher Aristotle and a restless explorer of new lands, Alexander was supposedly so eager to discover what lay beneath the ocean’s surface that he had himself lowered into the water in a glass diving bell. However, Alexander made the mistake of entrusting his mistress with attending to the chain meant to pull the bell back to the surface.
